© Fort militaire et musée Saint-Gobain à Modane - JP Gautronnet

Part of the Maginot Line in the Alps, Fort Saint-Gobain is a 1939-45 wartime structure in a unique state of preservation. A veritable land-based "submarine", it enabled its crew to live in total autarky for over 3 months.

Description

After crossing the drawbridge, visitors can explore the galleries, barracks and technical rooms that enabled a crew to live in autarky for 3 months in case of need.
The tour follows a signposted route, with explanatory panels in 3 languages (French-Italian-English).
The temperature remains constant at around 12°C in July and August. Warm clothing is therefore essential.
