94 - Mont Thabor and its refuge
Dreaming of a 3,000 m but never dared? Le Thabor is waiting for you! For those in good physical condition, this technically easy route takes you into the magical world of high mountains, with their majestic mineral landscapes.
Leaving the Lavoir, the first ascent on a track is a little steep, but you'll soon forget all about it when you reach the Loza water intake. The path winds through the alpine pastures, from chalet to chalet, amidst Tarines chewing on soft grass and wild flowers. Planted at the foot of Mont-Thabor, which serves as its backdrop, the refuge quietly awaits hikers needing a break on the shores of Lac Sainte-Marguerite and Lac Long. The trail then glides over the Col de la Vallée Étroite before climbing to Lac Peyron and Col des Méandes. The atmosphere becomes more lunar, and the fullness of the site envelops you as you make your way to the chapel, where French and Italian pilgrims gather every year. Once you've reached the summit, enjoy the wide-open spaces offered by Le Thabor, with its stunning views of the high peaks of the Alps, from Viso to La Meije. Yes, it's a long hike, but you'll come away with a head full of grandiose images. A real bath of serenity on this giant of stone!
