How do I get to the Vanoise Glacier Tour from Modane?

Would you like to hike the Vanoise Glaciers starting from Modane? It’s an excellent starting point for this iconic trek in the Alps, accessible without a car.
Less well-known than other access points like Pralognan-la-Vanoise, it offers a quick route to the Vanoise National Park via the Orgère Valley, a wild and unspoiled area.

Easy access to the Orgère Shelter

From the Modane train station, the Vanoise Glacier Tour typically begins in the Orgère Valley, which marks the entrance to the National Park. You have two options:

On foot

You can reach the Orgère mountain hut directly on foot from the Modane train station. This hike, which takes about 2½ to 3 hours, takes you gradually from the valley up into the mountains.

The climb is steady but steep, with a significant elevation gain right from the start of the hike (a distance of about 6 km and an elevation gain of over 800 meters).

This option strikes a good balance between accessibility and immersion, with a gradual ascent through a pristine natural environment.

By shuttle or by car

During the summer, a bus runs to the mountain hut every day from July 1 to August 31 on Line 1 (Modane – Valfréjus La Norma – Polset – Orgère).

By car, you can drive right up to the parking lot at the Orgère mountain hut.

This last option saves time and allows you to start the hike as close to the park as possible.

When is the best time to leave from Modane?

As with the entire Vanoise Glacier Circuit, the ideal time to visit is from mid-June through September.

Early in the season, the presence of snowfields can make certain sections difficult to navigate.

Conditions are changing rapidly, particularly as the snow melts, which can make crossing streams more difficult.

Before setting out, it is recommended that you check the weather forecast and contact the mountain huts to find out about current conditions.

Why choose Modane as the starting point for the Vanoise Glacier Tour?

Choosing Modane means opting for a more low-key and authentic getaway:
  • The Orgère Valley offers a different, more intimate atmosphere, where nature takes center stage. The journey there is a gentle one, far from the hustle and bustle, allowing you to gradually connect with the mountain environment.
  • Unlike other more popular starting points, you’ll avoid some of the summer crowds.
  • Another advantage: Modane Station has excellent train service (TER and TGV), making it an easily accessible starting point even without a car.

Book your mountain huts starting from L'Orgère

The mountain huts in Vanoise National Park are in high demand during the summer.

Advance reservations are required, especially between July 15 and August 15. You can make your reservations online on the Vanoise Mountain Huts website.

Adjusting your itinerary or choosing less crowded times of year also allows you to enjoy a more relaxing experience.

If you prefer to camp during your trek in the Vanoise, reservations are required, as the number of campsites is limited. These rules help preserve the richness and fragility of this environment.
