Swimming in Modane
When the heat gets to you, your first instinct is to look for a place that combines coolness and shade. Good news: just a few minutes from Valfréjus, by bus or car, Modane's intercommunal swimming pool is the perfect answer.
It offers a dual aquatic experience with a large 25 m indoor pool (6 lanes) and a 15 m learning pool, complemented by an AquaFun fun trail with slide and modules.
Via ferrata in cool mode
Climbing when the sun is beating down doesn't sound like a great idea. Unless you're climbing in a cool, shady area! After your via ferrata, extend your day in this area: a little further up, past the hamlet of Seuil, you can cool off and dip your feet in the stream, and why not take a well-deserved siesta in the shade of the fir trees. Isn't that what vacations are all about?
A night under the comforter in the middle of a heatwave
For a unique experience, head for the Refuge du Thabor, above Valfréjus. Leave your flip-flops behind and put on your hiking boots, as you're going to have to do a bit of walking (remember to bring your own equipment: hat or cap, sunglasses, minimum 1 bottle of water/person). It's well worth the effort, as you'll be dazzled by the wild beauty of the site.
Just above the refuge, at the foot of Mont-Thabor and Cheval Blanc, the two lakes of Sainte-Marguerite (Lac Rond and Lac Long) reflect a grandiose natural setting and invite you to relax (note: however tempting, avoid "taking a dip", as high-altitude lakes are very fragile environments and sensitive to changes caused by swimming. What's more, the water is very cold and swimming is not safe).
You can also spend the night up there (remember to book your overnight stay at the refuge) in the Thabor refuge or in bivouac mode nearby. At this altitude, even if it's hot in the valley, a comforter is a must.
