Le Fort du Replaton
Located high above Modane, Fort du Replaton is a Seré de Rivières-type military structure built between 1886 and 1893 to defend the entrance to the railway tunnel at the end of the 19th century.
Description
Fort du Replaton is located on a promontory overlooking Modane and Fourneaux, at an altitude of around 1,210 meters.
It was part of the defense of the French borders following the 1870 war, organized under the direction of General Séré de Rivières.
Its main mission was to protect the site of the Mont-Cenis railway tunnel, towards which its cannons were aimed.
The path from Loutraz offers a breathtaking view of the Arc valley and the town of Modane below. The walk is well worth a look at the fort.
The Replaton fort belongs to the Musée de la Traversée des Alpes (MTA) association. The association organizes occasional visits inside the fort.
